V Puro— A history of pure wine…
“The concept of this project comes from our desire to create distinctive wines based on the rich Portuguese varietal heritage. The choice was spurred by our quest for ancient vineyards of the variety Baga, and the project V PURO came together with the discovery of old vines, aged between 80 and 120 years old, planted in the heart of the paradoxical D.O.C. BAIRRADA. The scenario seemed to align perfectly with our aspirations, when it was substantiated by the discovery of handcrafted wines, from the 70s, 80s and 90s that were produced from the same vineyards. The wine Outrora Bairrada Clássico was first produced in the 2009 vintage and its elaboration is a tribute to the centenarian vineyards that are the region’s matriarchs and witnesses of times past (the meaning of outrora). The selection of the richest grapes from the Baga variety in a small vineyard, that we bought to save from extinction, gives rise to Outrora. The treading in “lagares” together with prolonged aging in oak and bottle, transform these grapes in a wine full of complexity, body, freshness and longevity. Clássico is a quality denomination, exclusive of Bairrada, just for very high end Baga wines.
In these picturesque vineyards there is also room for a few lost white grape vines (mainly from the variety Bical). In 2012 we picked a small quantity of white Bical grapes to make an almost virtual wine, because of its very limited amount, that we called Aliás.
Because we believe that Baga is a versatile and a rich variety, also in the more delicate forms , in 2013 we selected the grapes from cooler areas of the vineyard to produce a wine in which the key words were freshness and elegance. Thus came the Aliás red. Also fermented in “lagares” with manual treading, but with a shorter aging period. Lighter color, with delicate fruit and fine tannins, fresh acidity and a huge depth.
Doravante (meaning henceforth) is produced in an effort to provide a first step into the wines of V Puro and the Bairrada D.O.C. . A wonderful savory red wine made from co-fermented Baga and Touriga Nacional, and a serious white wine produced from Arinto and old-vine Bical and Cercial, are both bottled under the Doravante label.
Bairrada is a wonderful world full of fresh and intense flavors. The Atlantic influence in the Mediterranean climate combined with the clay and limestone soils and its native varieties, creates unique wines.”
