Quinta Várzea da Pedra – Bombarral – Obidos

The 26 hectares of farmland at Quinta Várzea de Pedra were first planted in 1910, four generations ago, and continue to produce not only grapes of exceptional terroir, acidity and character, but also the famous PDO pears called Pêra Rocha. The estate is located in the village of Bombarral, between the Atlantic Ocean (20 km), Óbidos Lagoon (20km) and Montejunto Mountain (15km), in the Óbidos DOC – sub region of Lisbon wines. Tomás Emídio is an extremely affable gent who’s passion and love for the land and his wines is contagious.

The Òbidos appellation has a long history of winemaking and has been referred to as “fine wines” since the earliest written texts on the wines of Portugal. But the many decades under the Salazar government’s promotion of large cooperative production, it’s proximity to the thriving thirsty city of Lisbonall contribute to the negligible count of quality producers in Óbidos.

The vineyard area of Quinta Várzea da Pedra is 14,5 ha, and greatly influenced by the intense Atlantic breeze, Mountain cold nights and sunny afternoons on rocky clay-limestone soils. The wines are produced in a very natural way with minimal amounts of sulphur used and fermentation sometimes taking the better part of a year.
